If your pet has recently passed away and you wish to honour them, know that the law permits burying a pet in your garden, under certain conditions.
What the Law Says About Animal Burials
First and foremost, the Rural and Maritime Fisheries Code prohibits the disposal of any animal body in a bin, sewer, nature, or public road. Violating this is punishable by a fine of up to €3,750.
Unlike other countries, burial in a family tomb is not allowed in France. The burial of animals is only permitted in pet cemeteries and private gardens for animals weighing under 40kg, under strict rules. For other animals, only cremation or rendering is allowed.
Failure to comply with these rules could lead to legal action.
How to Bury Your Pet in Your Garden?
If your pet weighs less than 40kg, you are allowed to bury them in your garden. However, you must comply with specific regulations:
- The hole must be dug more than 35 meters away from any habitation or water source.
- The body must be covered in quicklime.
- It must be covered by at least 1.20 meters of soil.
